Virginia Hamilton (1934–2002) received every major award in her field across the globe. Her long list of awards and honors includes the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award, the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Coretta Scott King Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, and four honorary doctorates. For more than twenty-five years, the Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth has been held annually at Kent State University. Beginning in 2010, the American Library Association with the Coretta Scott King Committee will be presenting a new honor each year, the Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award. Over the years, Ms. Hamilton was a passionate spokesperson for the Coretta Scott King Award. The profound impact of her life’s work is beyond measure.
Arnold Adoff is a poet and anthologist who has written more than thirty books for children and their older allies, including Street Music, an ALA Notable Book, and Slow Dance Heart Break Blues, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Among his many honors is the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. Arnold, the late Virginia Hamilton’s husband, has been a tireless caretaker of her work. They have two children and one grandchild. He lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Kacy Cook has pursued various writing-related paths for many years, such as editing magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and trade publications, as well as freelance writing. Kacy also pens novels for young readers, including Nuts, a novel for middle-grade readers forthcoming from Marshall Cavendish in the spring of 2010. She also contributed to Ohio Magazine and Ohioana Quarterly. Kacy divides her time between Yellow Springs and Columbus, Ohio.
